Bird’s Shadow

A secluded settlement in the midst of a barren meadow, while only knowing each other, is spiraled out of control at the sight of a new imprinting inside the grass fields.

It was a family of girls, boys, women, and men alike; all looked identical. All four had dark brown hair; all four had deep blue eyes; all four had the exact same colors of clothes in their wardrobe, and all four lived in the same house.
Yet why did they never get along?

Sky and Springbud argue over a paradox they’d found in one of their many books. ‘Twas not the first or last day that they would. Both siblings would argue all day and all night long, through rain and through sun, about why Sky believed ‘A’ about a subject and Springbud believed ‘B’ about the same subject, so to speak. Their parents were no better.
“It’s your turn to do the laundry, Ocean!”
“No, it’s your turn!” their father called back to their mother, “Snowflake, it’s your turn!”
None, not one, of their arguments was like a typical debate; each word was filled with so much bias a sane man would flee at the sight of the first syllable. And their names? It was custom in that region for a family to name each other, husband to wife, wife to husband, and so on.

Although, they were so isolated from their society that they never left the seemingly endless meadows. Prairies seemed to roll on until the end of oblivion. And they did not mind. They in fact approved of it. They never left the haven of unsound arguments that they had with each other.

That is, until the mark into their yard emerged.

Both Sky and Springbud woke at the same time. They heard a suspicious thud come from outside.
Oh, of course, they argued.
“That sounds like someone’s going to break in,” muttered Sky.
“No it doesn’t,” replied Springbud, “that was just a little thunder. Why are you so scaredy?”
“Why do you always jump to conclusions about the weather?” remarked his sister, “not everything is natural, y’know.”
“Sure it is.”
“Sure it isn’t.”
“Sure it is.”
“Sure it isn’t…!”
“Sure it is…!”
“Sure it isn’t!
“Sure it is!”
“SURE IT ISN’T!”
“SURE IT IS!”
They proceeded to yell at each other for the next ten minutes about whether the noise was thunder or a person.
The answer was, it was neither.

The moment the siblings stepped out of the house a purple mist emerged on the ground. What it was, nobody knew. Not even the fellows who were integrated into society, who could see it from the 600 mile distance that they were.
Neither could move from the spot they were standing. The mist seemed to be some sort of glue.
From the marking, a strange little lavender creature emerged and began to step towards the children.
Sky stared it in the eye as Springbud began to try and open the door.
“Who are you?”
“You are doomed not to know, but I will change your lives forever.”
